Why an SPF stick will become your new favorite (and how to use it)

Waarom een SPF stick jouw nieuwe favoriet wordt (en hoe je hem gebruikt)

Sun protection is the most important step in any skincare routine. Not the most expensive cream, not the newest serum, but SPF. It is the only product proven to slow down skin aging, help prevent hyperpigmentation, and protect your skin from damage you won't see for years.

Yet, most people skip their SPF during the day. Too sticky, too much hassle, and after one application in the morning, you forget about it for the rest of the day. That's precisely where the SPF stick comes in.

What exactly is an SPF stick?

An SPF stick is sun protection in a convenient, twist-up stick, a bit like a thick deodorant stick or lip balm, but for your face. You twist up the product, swipe it across your skin, and you're done. No white hands, no messy bottles, no greasy layer that gets everywhere.

The big advantage is its convenience. An SPF stick fits in your bag, pocket, or makeup pouch, and you can reapply it anywhere, anytime – at the beach, during your lunch break, in the car. And that's exactly why it works: sun protection is only effective if you actually reapply it.

Why reapplication is so important

This is the part almost everyone misses. SPF is not a "once in the morning and done" product.

As soon as you apply sun protection, its effectiveness slowly starts to diminish. Sweating, rubbing, touching, sunlight – these gradually break down the layer. Over time, that morning layer simply doesn't protect you as well as you think.

The rule of thumb: reapply sun protection every two hours when you're outdoors during the day, and more often if you've been sweating or in the water. With regular SPF cream, that's a hassle; you don't want to mess up your makeup or get your hands dirty. With a stick, you simply swipe it over your face, even over your makeup. Thirty seconds of work.

How to use an SPF stick? (step-by-step)

An SPF stick is deliberately simple to use, but there are a few things that make the difference between "a little protection" and "really well protected."

1. Apply it as the last step in your skincare routine. In your morning routine, SPF comes after your cleanser, toner, serum, and day cream, and before your makeup. Sun protection should always be the top layer of your skincare.

2. Don't be stingy. Most people apply too little sun protection, which means they actually get a lower level of protection than the factor on the packaging promises. Swipe the stick back and forth several times over each area – forehead, nose, cheeks, chin, and neck – until you have an even layer.

3. Don't forget the spots. Ears, the side of your neck, the back of your neck (if wearing a V-neck), the backs of your hands. These often-forgotten areas get the most sun.

4. Let it absorb. Give the layer about half a minute before applying your makeup or heading out the door.

5. Reapply. Take the stick with you and swipe it on every two hours. This is where the stick truly shines; you can do it anywhere, even over makeup.

SPF stick vs. regular sunscreen: when to choose what?

An SPF stick isn't necessarily a replacement for your bottle of sunscreen; they complement each other.

For a day at the beach or a long day in the sun, a generously applied lotion or cream remains your base. The stick is your reapplication hero: the product that ensures you actually do that important reapplication, instead of skipping it. For daily use in the city, going to work, shopping, or sitting on a terrace — a stick is often ideal as a complete, practical solution.

Who can benefit from an SPF stick?

In short: everyone who often skips sun protection because it's "too much effort." But it's especially great for:

  • People who wear makeup — reapply without ruining your look
  • Athletes and outdoor enthusiasts — quick reapplication without greasy hands
  • Those on the go — fits in any bag
  • Parents — also easy to apply to squirming children
  • The forgetful among us — precisely because it's so low-threshold, it actually gets used

Small product, big difference

Sun protection is the most underestimated step in skincare, and simultaneously the most proven. The problem was never that people didn't know SPF was important. The problem was that it took too much effort to do it consistently.

An SPF stick removes that barrier. Small, fast, portable, and easy to reapply. Exactly the characteristics that ensure you actually use it, and ultimately, that's all that matters.
